The story goes like this. Andy Serkis, when playing Gollum in the Lord of the Rings films, needed to keep his voice alive despite the strain he was putting on his larynx. So the crew kept it going with Gollum juice – honey, lemon and ginger tea to you and I.
Anyroadup, my Awesome Fiancée has the lurgi at the moment, including a sore throat and a somewhat diminished voice. And because I’m a geek who was watching the featurettes on the extended Two Towers DVD set last week, I remembered the Gollum juice and made some. Seems to be working so far.
You can find a recipe on t’interweb easily enough, but here’s mine for posterity (and my own reference):
- 1 cubic inch of ginger root, shredded or finely sliced
- 3 tbsp lemon juice
- 3.5 tbsp honey (or to taste)
- 750 ml boiling water
- Combine honey, lemon and ginger in a thermos
- Add water, stir, and leave to brew for 10-15 minutes (or longer; this is a thermos after all).
- Drink (carefully).
This should make at least two decent mugfuls of the stuff.
