BBC News: Carvings riddle stumps villagers:

The sculptures feature the same carved symbol and come with a riddle attached.

Each of the heads, which are up to a foot tall, looks different but all feature the same carving - which appears to spell out the word "paradox" - and a note bearing the riddle: "Twinkle twinkle like a star does love blaze less from afar?"

But... It's obvious

The BBC is carrying a (naturally very important) story about a cat in the states who can apparently predict death. From the article:

Oscar has a habit of curling up next to patients at the home in Providence, Rhode Island, in their final hours.

...

A doctor who treats patients at the home said she believed there was probably a biochemical explanation, rather than the cat being psychic.

Which just goes to show that the Doctor doesn't read the right books. The cat isn't psychic at all. But cats can see Death:

Death is not invisible. Most people just refuse to acknowledge him for who he is, unless he insists. Under normal circumstances, only those of a magical disposition (e.g. witches and wizards), children and cats can see him, or allow themselves to see him.

Once again, Pterry is found to be accurate. Also, interestingly, Firefox doesn't seem to think that Pterry is a typo. Oh, wait. It does. Never mind then.

You'd laugh, if it were funny

Hamas 'Mickey Mouse' killed off (BBC)

A Palestinian TV station has killed off a controversial Mickey Mouse lookalike that critics said was spreading anti-US and anti-Israeli messages to children.

The Hamas-affiliated al-Aqsa channel aired the last episode on Friday, showing the character, Farfur, being beaten to death by an "Israeli agent".

...

In the final broadcast an actor said to be an Israeli agent tries to buy the land of the squeaky-voiced Mickey Mouse lookalike.

Farfur brands the Israeli a "terrorist" and is beaten to death.

He was killed "by the killers of children", Saraa says.

Geography: physics slowed down with trees stuck in it

And just like physics, it can surprise you sometimes. Lake disappears suddenly in Chile

"In March we patrolled the area and everything was normal," said Juan Jose Romero from Chile's National Forestry Corporation, Conaf. "We went again in May and to our surprise we found that the lake had completely disappeared. All that was left were chunks of ice and an enormous fissure."
I'm reminded, rather ironically, of Christopher Rowe's short story Another Word For Map Is Faith, which I've just finished reading and which I recommend heartily to you, dear reader.

About

Graham Binns is a writer, photographer, musician and software developer from Lancaster, England, with far too much hair, a penchant for odd t-shirts and a magnificent hat. He has been making things up for as long as he can remember and has been making code work for long enough to make a living from it.

He has written one novel, which is in the process of composting, and is working remembering how to write before embarking on a second. In the meantime, he photographs things, since it's easier not to have to make the world up in his head all of the time.
