Today's xkcd strip, Python, gets it right once again:

Incidentally (he says), I met xkcd, a.k.a. Randall Munroe, when I was in the States. He's a nice bloke.

Word invention

Your word for today:

Mumblefuck (MUM-bul-fuck), n.:
That which happens between sleep-fuddled lovers on a Sunday morning.

Invented1, in a roundabout sort of way, by your humble author and his friends. Use it at your pleasure. Verb forms are also acceptable.

I have lots of work to do tonight and absolutely no inclination to do any of it, so I may blog for your pleasure instead. There, I've committed myself to it now...

1 Actually, urbandictionary.com tells me that I'm not the first to have discovered this particular portmanteau, but I prefer my version of it. Take your pick.

Woman jailed for testicle attack:

She pulled off his left testicle and tried to swallow it, before spitting it out. A friend handed it back to Mr Jones saying: "That's yours."

Gotta love New Scientist. And geeks, for that matter

in: google maps humour links new scientist

Today's New Scientist tells me that if you try to use Google Maps to find directions from anywhere in North America to London, you invariably get directed to swim across the Atlantic via Boston.

from:New York City to: London gives the following snippet:

21. Merge onto Atlantic Ave    (0.8 mi)
22. Turn right at Central St (0.1 mi)
23. Turn right at Long Wharf (0.1 mi)
24. Swim across the Atlantic Ocean (3,462 mi / 29 days 0 hours)
25. Slight right at E05 (0.5 mi)
26. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto E05/Pont Vauban (0.1 mi)

Once again, then, New Scientist serves to be reliably accurate and Google serves to be reliably - and quietly - irreverent. Now all I have to do is train to swim at 4.9 miles per hour (on average) for thirty days straight and I'm sorted.

About

Graham Binns is a writer, photographer, musician and software developer from Lancaster, England, with far too much hair, a penchant for odd t-shirts and a magnificent hat. He has been making things up for as long as he can remember and has been making code work for long enough to make a living from it.

He has written one novel, which is in the process of composting, and is working remembering how to write before embarking on a second. In the meantime, he photographs things, since it's easier not to have to make the world up in his head all of the time.
