Eric, in the foreground, and his pal Ernie, mooching about in the garden.

I wouldn't have posted this normally, since it's not exactly the best of shots ever and there's absolutely nothing special about it, but the brightness of the red on their faces just caught my fancy. This has been cropped, but the colour hasn't been retouched at all.

It's a wonder that they manage to evade predators, though I guess that there aren't that many predators that would think a pheasant was worth the effort.

This is Eric. Well, he's an Eric. Eric is the generic moniker for all the cock-pheasants (there's about five of them) that roam around our garden, apart from the black ones (of which there are two), which are called Ernie. Eric and Ernie. Geddit?

This isn't the most fantabulous photo ever, but with only a 200mm lens and no monopod it was the best I could do at very short notice. This is the only time that an Eric has let me get close enough to get a decent photo of him. Not that that's a reason to not invest in a 600mm lens at some point in the future...

Colours were tweaked slightly in the Gimp to remove a blueish hue. Also, the image was sharpened a little. Notice also the blackbird in the background trying to get out of frame and failing miserably.

About

Graham Binns is a writer, photographer, musician and software developer from Lancaster, England, with far too much hair, a penchant for odd t-shirts and a magnificent hat. He has been making things up for as long as he can remember and has been making code work for long enough to make a living from it.

He has written one novel, which is in the process of composting, and is working remembering how to write before embarking on a second. In the meantime, he photographs things, since it's easier not to have to make the world up in his head all of the time.
