Most People Stop at Page 3

And not just for the boobs, according to the BBC:

Most people using a search engine expect to find what they are looking for on the first page of results, says a US study.

At most, people will go through three pages of results before giving up...

Good thing, then, that if people were inclined to Google me they would still find me at the top of page one, although given the fact that I'm going to be touting for work soon enough that's perhaps not such a great thing after all...

The Bloggers Wine Freebie

I am behind - very, very behind - with my blogging. Having decided that I really needed to blow some of the cobwebs off The BinnsBlog and GBC in general I took a look at my WordPress control panel and nearly... Well, I didn't nearly do anything. I just sighed, took a deep breath, and then set about the draft posts list with a machete.

Once again, you see, I'd ended up with a list of posts that had the potential at the time to be topical and apposite, but which never got finished. So out they went, leaving only two behind: This one, which I am, of course, going to finish within the next ten minutes so that I can at least update the site in some way, shape or form, and another one entitled <Workmate>'s Anti-Blogging Rant, which I shall endeavour to finish later. After that it's anyone's guess, frankly, but at least I'm willing to give it a try. I'm also considering my options with regard to podcasting. More on that another time though.

What I want to talk about in this post, you see, is not blogging, nor workmates, nor anything of the sort. Well, okay, it is about the blogging. Sort of.

What I'm getting at, in an admitedly round-the-houses manner is wine. More specifically, white wine (Sauvignon Blanc to be precise) from South Africa. Even more specifically (last time, I promise) I'm talking about the Stormhoek / Gapingvoid Bloggers Wine Freebie.

Well, okay, not the freebie part. The whole idea of the freebie was that bloggers from [insert country here] would email Stormhoek and, in exchange for having a regularly updated blog and being over eighteen, would be given a free bottle of Stormhoek's Sauvignon Blanc. Unfortunately the offer has now been closed, so far as I can see, but if anyone from Stormhoek needed confirmation that this sort of marketing works, here it is:

On the Shelf Having read a lot about Stormhoek in the Gapingvoid blog (and in more than a few others that I happen to frequent) I decided that, having been paid on Friday, I would purchase a bottle and see what all the fuss was about.

I liked it. The wine has a very fresh, light taste. It's a little sharp when it first comes out of the bottle, but that might have been because I didn't chill it for long enough. However, leaving it for twenty-four hours seems to work wonders because on Saturday night it was wonderfully fresh, smooth and refreshing. Quite delightful; I'll probably buy some again before all that long.

See, I knew I could finish at least one post. Now all I have to do is manage to finish some more.

As an aside, I'll just mention that since Google Blogsearch went online, the trackback and comment spam that I've been receiving on a daily basis has increased by at least a factor of five, which is horribly depressing.

Thanks

Tom Reynolds has posted some excerpts from the London Ambulance Service's unofficial messageboard today.

Once again I think that this is proof positive of how proud we should be of such a professional, dedicated bunch of people, and how glad we should be that they are as good as they are.

About

Graham Binns is a writer, photographer, musician and software developer from Lancaster, England, with far too much hair, a penchant for odd t-shirts and a magnificent hat. He has been making things up for as long as he can remember and has been making code work for long enough to make a living from it.

He has written one novel, which is in the process of composting, and is working remembering how to write before embarking on a second. In the meantime, he photographs things, since it's easier not to have to make the world up in his head all of the time.
