Available Light

I decided, after a day when I found myself stuck in the house pretty much all of the time, and in which I saw my capacity for excursion limited significantly by something important in my car going boing, to play with the light available to me.

This was taken outside my front door. The only light source is the light from inside the house, which was filtered through a fairly thin curtain.

I like this shot, though I wish it could have been a bit sharper. That was a result of using such a wide aperture for the shot (1.4 so not a huge amount was in focus) and there not being enough light to make sure that the camera was focussing on what I thought it was focussing on - i.e. my right eye. Still, I think it came out pretty well, all things considered.

I made this monochrome through a yellow-green filter to try and disguise the fact that the sclera of my right eye is bright red as I'm suffering an annoying bout of conjunctivitis. Also, the wind was blowing in my face, which didn't help either my eye or the stability of the tripod.

Playing with reflections

This started off as an attempt at a bog-standard, in the mirror self portrait, but then the tiny reflections in the droplets of condensation caught my eye.

I told myself that I was trying to illustrate how observing a thing, in this case the droplets, changes the thing. But in hindsight I think I was being incredibly pretentious.

I wish I had a macro lens for this kind of thing.

I was out of inspiration tonight, photographically speaking. Luckily, the brainjuice was flowing in the direction of prose (though you'll note that I took long enough out of it to get this shot, with a rather precariously balanced camera).

That's the ultimate in procrastination: photographing yourself pretending to do the thing you should be doing and telling yourself that really, it's okay, because it's still creative.

I got a new toy today, a Sigma 30mm/1.4 EX DC HSM lens. Very nice. Very good for portrait work. Heavier than expected.

Being alone in the house with no other subjects I decided to muck around a bit with it. This was an out-take from a set that never quite worked. I just like the expression.
